Setting Expectations

Have you ever decided you were going to change something in your life? Have you ever decided you were going to start doing something? Now did you make that change? Did you finish what you started? There’s a good chance that many of you said “No” to both questions. I know that personally I said no to both questions. There were changes that I wanted to make, I began to make and yet to this day I’ve still not accomplished. The same thing goes for finishing what I started, I’ve started many things only to not finish them. Why?

Today as I pondered this I believe that I’ve come across what could be the solution to my problem. As I think back to the changes I wanted to make and the different ventures I’ve started I realized that I believed that change would come quick. I thought that I would make money quickly, and my success would be just around the bend. In other words my expectations for the results I desired to have didn’t come when I thought they would therefore I gave up. My motivation came to a screeching halt and I forgot about where I wanted to be and just accepted that where I was. Then I decided that what I was already doing was easier. This is also a lack of commitment and lack of consistency, the foundation for success.

Something that I realized is that success rarely comes overnight or in just a few weeks. It’s usually months, and years of hard work. Day in and day out, nothing comes easy no matter how much you want it to and believe that it should. In fact this mindset of entitlement will get you nowhere fast.

Setting expectations of limited time to receive unlimited results are usually unrealistic. Setting an unrealistic goal can undermine your drive thus wearing your motivation down.  It’s not that it can’t be done but the time line in which you expect to see it happen could possibly be the clincher. Instead, plan out your goals like a map, setting small goals along the way. As you continue to achieve your results and reach your goals you are on your way. You are also building momentum and increasing your chances of reaching your goal. So a more effective expectation would be a small goal that is obviously a stepping stone to a much larger goal. Don’t set yourself up for failure by expecting too much in too short of time but instead know that the path to success is usually long and tough. You’ll have to get through to go through but that’s all a part of the process.

Making this applicable now:

1. If you have a large goal make several small goals that are on the road to reaching your large goal. This way you know you’re on the right path, you’re focused and you’re making progress.

2. Give yourself time to grow and reach your goals, IT WILL NOT HAPPEN OVERNIGHT!!!!

3. Remember that life is a marathon, not a sprint.

Will Smith’s Good Habits

Will Smith is an extremely successful individual, one of my favorites in Hollywood. I love many of his movies. I grew up watching The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. I never thought about nor did I ever think about how driven, committed, and focused he is. He describes many attributes that I believe we should incorporate into our lives. I’m sure you’ll pick up on them, make these concepts a part of your life, I am.

Consistency & Commitment

These two factors make up the foundation of any success in any endeavour. The only way around these two key driving forces is to win the Lottery. Winning the lottery can get you easy success, and of course this is based on how you define success. Success can mean many things to many people and ultimately I’m speaking in generalities, when I say winning the lottery, I don’t actually mean winning the lottery. I pretty much mean any big break that someone could get. If they are born with a silver spoon in their mouth or know someone powerful who can take care of them in the work force and still even with these types of connections that the easy success that is attained rather quickly will be lost quickly unless the commitment and consistency is utilized to keep it up, otherwise, The “Success” will be short-lived and you’ll fall more like a failure when you have it and then lose it.

Dedicate yourself to the good habits of  being consistent and committed in all of your endeavours, when the tough gets going, you keep going! Don’t give up and just keep moving forward, you’ll be amazed at the results you will yield as time goes on.
